Couples Workshop
Here is a great opportunity to attend a fantastic couple's workshop, right here in our community:When: June 26-28, 2009 (Friday - Sunday)Where: Oddfellows Lodge in Grass ValleyBarry and I have been together 23 years and last November, we took this workshop in Portland, OR. It was powerful in ways we never imagined. We have both experienced therapy that never touched the places we found by late Friday night of our weekend, let alone the next two days! We continue to use the tools and rituals in our daily life - and I can't imagine ever stopping. It was so profound in fact that my husband jokes about changing our anniversary to that Sunday in November when the weekend ended. The weekend here is led by the founders of this work: Rich Tosi, who is one of the founders of the Mankind Project, and his wife, Char Tosi, founder of Woman Within. With 25 years of experience, they bring incredible leadership, ground-breaking exercises, and a deep knowledge of group and individual dynamics to the weekend. They are amazing! Maybe your relationship is strong and loving and you are looking for tools to help keep it that way. Maybe you are growing apart and would like to increase healthy communication as you separate. I hope that if you and your partner are up for a weekend of growth and insight, you will consider this opportunity. The weekend starts at 5:00 on Friday and ends Sunday at 4:00.The cost for the weekend is $795 and there are no meals or lodging included in that fee. (That's why it's great if you're local, no lodging to worry about.) There is room for 18 couples and 12 spots are already paid up.There is a very minimal website right here that talks about the weekend. Beyond that, Barry and I would be very happy to talk about what happens and what we got out of it.

Academy of Creative Arts Summer Program Kicks Off New Expanded Summer Season
“Academy Expands to Accommodate More Young Artists”
The Center for the Arts kicks off their new summer art emersion program June 15 2009. The program has doubled in size to accommodate the growing requests by students and parents. This summer the Academy of Creative Arts plans to give children the opportunity to experience art instruction from some of Nevada County’s most professional artists and art instructors.
Based on past summers the Academy of Creative Arts will again run from 9AM-3PM daily, Monday through Friday with a student art show to be held the last hour of each Friday afternoon. Parents and friends are invited by the students to come view their artwork in the Main Gallery at the Center. Special invitations are hand fashioned by each young artist earlier in the week. It gives each student an opportunity to shine in their own community.
Each week, students are given the opportunity to explore watercolor, acrylics, cartooning, pastels, drawing, paper mache, collage, line and design projects and much more. The scheduling of art classes is done in blocks of time with additional free time scheduled in for students to continue working in their favorite medium. Art instructors this summer include Denise Wey, Sharon Griffiths, Christine Elder, Margie Miller and Susan Barry.
“This summer’s program promises to once again expose students to a new variety of projects and talented art instruction.” Remarked Susan Barry, art director for the program.
The summer program began three years ago with a two-week visual fine arts program. Last year a third week was added. The great response from parents and students prompted the Academy to schedule an additional two weeks, with one dedicated to teen’s ages 13 – 17 yrs. old. July 13 – 17, 2009. Weekly enrollment is kept small in size enrolling no more than thirty students. Classes are then broken down into two or three smaller groups to give young artists more individual instruction.
Students arrive at 9:00 a.m. to work part of the day in the Main Gallery, where they have Nevada County artists displaying a variety of artwork. This exposure to local artist work gave the programs director the idea to invite the artist to come meet the students. This summer students will meet an artist showing in the gallery and have the opportunity to ask questions about their artwork. During lunches and free time, young artists can decorate their portfolios, work on art projects or read art books provided in a new portable art library. By 3PM in the afternoon as students prepare to leave they have been exposed to several mediums and quality instruction. “I was surprised to see so many children wanting to stay and work on additional art projects. This told me we are filling a much needed gap in their regular yearly art curriculum.” says, Barry. The Center for the Arts is proud to offer a program in the visual arts that brings students a quality summer art experience that is also lots of FUN!
We are pleased to announce the 2009 Academy of Creative Arts has been sponsored by Mrs. LaVonne Amaral.
If you are interested in enrolling your child in the Academy of Creative Arts, call 274-8384 or 265-6076, and check out the website at www.thecenterforthearts. org

Come and join in the activities at Aikido'Ka all day on April 4! The events are free to all. As you probably know by now, a key aspect of our training at Aikido'Ka is community service. As aikidoists, we are peaceful warriors for ourselves, our families and communities. As such, we have a duty to serve. At Aikido'Ka, we put our duty to serve into action through Project Based Leadership Training (PBLT). When our students, individually or as a class, plan and carry out service projects, they grow their character and become real leaders in the community.Everyone at Aikido'Ka performs community service projects. Frank Bloksberg Sensei, as part of his 18-month-long Ultimate Black Belt test (for his next level black belt), is performing 5 to 10 community-based projects. Each project must involve more than 10 people. On April 4, Frank Sensei will be offering three self-defense classes, free of charge.
