Summer Reading Program

What crawls, buzzes, flies, swarms, chirps, flutters, and fascinates us all? The amazing world of insects! Come to the Nevada County Libraries this summer to explore insects and arachnids, through programs, activities, prize drawings, reading games, and more.Young people from pre-school through school-age are welcome. Summer readers will receive reading logs and stickers for charting their buggy reading journeys, in a booklet full of activities, along with a guide to insect and arachnid books and other resources, and some surprises. Prize drawings will be held, and each summer reader will receive a free book at our final celebration parties.Sign-up day is Tuesday, June 17, during open hours of the libraries. Join us for kick-off activities at both the Grass Valley Library-Royce Branch, and at the Madelyn Helling Library in Nevada City. Sign-ups will also take place at the Bear River and Penn Valley Stations; participants may sign up at any branch after June 17 as well.Magic by Alex will amaze audiences as magician Alex Ramon, considered Northern California’s best sleight-of-hand magician, presents magic shows on Thursday, June 26, at 10:30-11:30am in Grass Valley, and for two shows in Nevada City, at 1:00-2:00pm and at 2:30-3:30pm.Tommy’s Space Bug Adventure Puppet Show will be presented on Thursday, July 3, at 10:30-11:30am in Grass Valley, and for two shows in Nevada City, at 1:00-2:00pm and at 2:30-3:30pm. The Puppet Art Theater Company’s show is interactive, and features a behind-the-scenes puppetry demonstration.The Corny Crow Show with Steve Chaney, Ventriloquist, comes to the libraries on Wednesday, July 16, at 10:30-11:30am in Grass Valley, and for two shows in Nevada City, at 1:00-2:00pm and at 2:30-3:30pm. Another interactive presentation, Steve and his puppet Cornelius Crowe always keep audiences laughing with their juggling, ventriloquism, and all-around positive atmosphere.Bug Blast! programs will feature an entomologist with bugs and bug facts, and Bee Blasts! present a beekeeper with real bees! We’ll have activities for children too, and a craft which they may take home. Bug Blasts are on Tuesday, July 8 at 1:00pm at the Grass Valley Library, and on Wednesday, July 9 at 3:30pm at the Bear River Library Station. Bee Blasts are on Saturday, July 12 at 11:00am at the Madelyn Helling Library and at 1:00pm at the Penn Valley Station.We’ll wrap up our summer reading with the music of world-renowned folksinger and songwriter Bonnie Lockhart at our celebration parties. Bonnie will perform lively, interactive programs at both the Madelyn Helling and Grass Valley-Royce Branch Libraries on Tuesday, July 22, with treats and free books for all.All programs are free of charge.
